The Michigan Potato Industry Commission (MPIC) set up shop on the north lawn of Michigan's state capitol yesterday, serving up free french fries, potato chips and gourmet potato dishes.

Organizers say it's all about letting people in Michigan know that the potato farming industry in Michigan is big.

"Consumers don't really know that we grow potatoes in the state," said Nate Chesher, marketing manager of the MPIC. "What you see on the store shelf when you go there is usually a Michigan potato."

Michigan is the country's leading producer of potatoes that are processed into potato chips.

Michigan growers harvest about 2 billion pounds of potatoes every year.
