A new version of J.R. Simplot’s Innate biotech potato has been given preliminary approval by federal officials.
The USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) said it will deregulate a line of genetically engineered potatoes. The biotech Innate Snowden variety, developed by the J.R. Simplot Company, features low acrylamide potential, reduced black spot bruising and lowered reducing sugars, according to the USDA. The agency previously reviewed and deregulated these biotech traits in another genetically engineered potato developed by J.R. Simplot Company, referred to simply as Innate.
“We have prepared an environmental assessment and finding of no significant impact, as well as a plant pest risk similarity assessment,” stated the USDA report.
Interested parties can view the documents and submit comments online through Jan. 7, according to the USDA.
