The import of U.S. potatoes into Taiwan has continued to increase with the import volume from July-December 2012, reaching 16,869 metric tons, an increase of 124 percent when compared with the same period in 2011. Although at least 2/3 of the volume was imported for chipping process, table-stock were also seen to increase in volume and in additional varieties.
The Wellcome Supermarket Chain started direct importing of U.S. potatoes to Taiwan. After its first shipment in December 2012, the company imported an additional two containers of fingerling and large size red potatoes. These potatoes were widely distributed in its 276 supermarket and seven Jason's Market Place outlets. Organic U.S. russet potatoes were also widely distributed in approximately 300 stores of six organic chains in Taiwan. Two importers are the main companies importing organic potatoes, with the potatoes being repacked with two to three potatoes per bag/wrapping and sold at approximately $1 (U.S.) per unit.
