U.S. growers planted 22,000 acres, or 2.4 percent, more than a year ago, when they were dealing with cutbacks related to COVID-19.

An estimates drop in acreage within the top 13 states is forecast in Wisconsin, Colorado, Michigan and California.

Potato acreage is still 25,000 acres below 2019 estimates, with water availability in California playing a role.

Total planted acreage includes 13 states reporting to USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS).
