North Dakota growers, dealers and processors held 16.1 million hundredweight of potatoes in storage on Dec. 1, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Current stocks represent 70 percent of the 2020 production. Total stocks are defined as all potatoes on hand, regardless of use, including those that will be lost through future shrinkage and dumping.

Comparing stocks by type, Russets accounted for 52 percent of the total, up from 1 percent in 2019. Round whites were 27 percent of the total, up from 3 percent in 2019. Long whites were 2 percent of the total.  Reds, at 16 percent of total stocks, were down 4 percent from 2019. Yellows were 3 percent of the total.
