Wisconsin is No. 3 in the nation when it comes to potato production, but there’s always room for improvement.
At the Hancock Agricultural Research Station, researchers from UW-Madison are looking for solutions to common issues farmers may face when growing potatoes. On Thursday, the facility held a field day to discuss soil, pests, techniques and different varieties of potatoes.
“We have people devoted to work on problems with more incidents in Wisconsin,” said superintendent of the facility Felix Navarro.
Because Wisconsin produces so many potatoes, it’s difficult to sell them all at harvest time. So, the facility also researches optimal storage of potatoes at the Potato and Vegetable Research Facility.
All the work done in Hancock is then shared with growers, in hopes of keeping the Wisconsin potato crop one of the best in the nation.
