McCain Produce, the seed and fresh arm of food giant McCain Foods, has purchased selected assets of PEI Produce, including two plants in Charlottetown as well as land and potato-handling equipment.

The announcement made Oct. 11 will see McCain take over PEI Produce’s seed and table potatoes for North American and offshore markets. McCain says it wants to build a stronger potato business. It doesn’t expect the amalgamation will change employment levels.

The company has been on a buying spree: in October it purchased Wing Wong Foods of Montreal. It was Canada’s leading manufacturer of frozen Chinese food entrees.

In June the company purchased Goodman Fielder International (Taiwan). This was a first in Asia for the company. GFI makes frozen dumplings and ethnic Chinese frozen foods.
