Potatoes Part of Top Five U.S. Diets

Side Delights shared data from the recently released U.S. News and World Report 2018 Best Diets rankings report, with the top five focusing on vegetables, including potatoes. The top two ranked diets (a tie) are the Mediterranean diet and the DASH diet. The Mediterranean diet is based on the healthy eating habits of the region and recommends foods such as olive oil, fish, and vegetables ­ such as potatoes. The report included research that the diet may help prevent some chronic diseases and increases longevity. The DASH diet, which has been ranked as the number one overall diet by Report for eight consecutive rankings, was started by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) to help reduce blood pressure, by focusing on fruit, vegetables, whole grain, and lean protein.
The third- and fourth-ranked diets were the Flexitarian diet, which is based on the benefits of a plant-heavy diet which still includes meat, and Weight Watchers which includes a variety of potato recommendations and recipes on its website. The fifth spot in U.S. News and World Report's latest ranking is a three-way tie between the MIND Diet, TLC Diet, and Volumetrics, all of which recommend a healthy intake of vegetables, including potatoes. Potatoes are also included in other top diets and nutrition plans such as Vegan, Eating Clean, the Raw Food Diet, the Alkaline Diet, and Whole 30.
