It’s potato planting time in Florida. St. Johns County in the northern part of the state is well-known for its potato production, with the town of Hastings being at the center of it. The county’s loose, sandy soils are well-suited to growing tuberous vegetables. Farmers grow potatoes for use in potato chip production or fresh table stock.

Varieties that perform well in northern Florida include Sebago, Red Lasoda, Yukon Gold and Russet Norkotah.

Northern Florida soils and late winter climate are ideal for growing potatoes, and are also popular among home gardeners in the region.
