ORLANDO, Fla.-The U.S. Potato Board unveiled a free app for smartphones at the Potato Expo in Orlando, Fla., last week. The app is designed to keep potato growers and others in the industry up to date with issues and events.

Developed by Core Industries, the app was designed in order to help the USPB communicate directly with growers in a convenient method. David Fraser, USPB Communications and Policy Committee V.P. says growers have a right to know what the board does with the $12 million it collects annually in assessments.

"We have our website and we send out e-mail advisories, but we wanted to make it as convenient as possible for growers to see what we are doing whenever they want to," Fraser says. "I realized one day when I was talking to a guy who was in the cab of his tractor that today's growers increasingly have laptops and smartphones with them while they are working in the field."

The free app works with the iPhone and Android platforms and provides the "newest news" from the board, Fraser says.
