The House Agriculture Committee approved a sweeping farm bill May 15 that would trim the $80 billion-per-year Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and would cut about $2.5 billion a year from the domestic food aid program used by one in seven Americans, according to the Associated Press, reported NPR.
The bill proceeded to the full Senate May 20, and House leaders say they will bring the bill to the floor in June. Some proposals to restrict purchases made through SNAP target certain categories of food, such as snack foods, including the amendment to limit SNAP choice filed by Sen. Charles Grassley (R-IA). The amendment would have required USDA to promulgate regulations to provide for consistent nutrition standards between SNAP and the school lunch program, but was not introduced or brought to a vote. SFA members are encouraged to reach out to their elected representatives to show support for preserving SNAP choice.
