2016 provided a lot of new information for the retail sector of the potato industry. Russet potatoes continued to dominate the retail landscape in 2016, with a 65 percent share of the total volume of potatoes sold at retail.

Bags larger than 10 pounds saw a significant decline in volume; however, this information does not include any data from Costco, a major bulk potato retailer.

Although 2016 may seem like it was not a positive year for potatoes in terms of dollars and volume, the industry did see growth in petites and organics.

The attached presentation summarizes the full year 2016 retail data. Questions regarding the industry’s retail sector may contact Ross Johnson, Potatoes USA’s global marketing manager for retail, at ross@potatoesusa.com.
