National Frozen Foods, a frozen food processing company with facilities in Oregon and Washington, has received a charity voucher worth $4,000 after winning Tomra Sorting Food’s Golden Bean competition.

The competition was held to celebrate the launch of the new Tomra 5B, a state-of-the-art sorter for the vegetable, fresh cut and potato processing industries.

During the competition, the Tomra 5B processed about 45 pounds of green beans, one of them made of gold. The person who came closest to correctly guessing the moment the golden bean would be ejected was awarded the voucher. The prize was presented to Kevin Massey at the National Frozen Foods plant in Quincy, Wash.

Massey, who entered the competition on behalf of National Frozen Foods, decided to donate his charity voucher to the Keith Massey Memorial Fund, a community celebrating loved ones with Lou Gehrig’s disease, also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The Massey Memorial was established by Kevin Massey in honor of his late brother, Keith.

“ALS is a debilitating disease for which there is no cure,” said Massey. “Witnessing Keith’s battle is something I will never forget. When Keith succumbed to the disease, I lost a younger brother, a fishing partner and a friend. Tomra’s contribution to my brother’s memorial fund will help provide the money necessary to fund research for a cure, so hopefully someday we will live in a world without ALS. The entire Massey family is grateful for this donation.”

“We are very pleased that National Frozen Foods chose the Massey Memorial as their good cause,” said Karel Strubbe, Tomra’s sales director for the Americas.”

Strubbe went on to describe the Tomra 5B sorter: “Recent developments in our technology result in more accurate decisions about the quality of the product. These technological advancements not only improve the quantity of food available, but they also maintain the high levels of quality expected by consumers who are increasingly interested in what they are purchasing. The Tomra 5B boasts a powerful combination of exceptional features, state-of-the-art innovation and ease of use. It is a great addition to the Tomra range, guaranteeing excellent results throughout the entire sorting process.”
