SunRain Varieties held its annual customer open house Aug. 25 at its office and greenhouses near Idaho Falls, Idaho. Over 100 people from across the U.S. came to see the 97 potato varieties SunRain currently grows and markets (about one-fourth of which are deemed specialty varieties).

“This open house is a good platform to introduce our new varieties,” said business manager Aron Derbidge. “But it’s not just to display our varieties, but to show customers we’re not just brokers—we’re actually seed potato growers.”

Every SunRain cultivar is subjected to taste test, sales representative Jim Corneillie told Potato Grower. “We have more than just this idea of a potato looking nice and yielding well,” Corneillie said. “With every variety, we ask, ‘Is it something we want to market, and will people want to eat it?’”
