Peru’s potato production authorities predict that the country will produce over 4.5 million tons of potatoes this year. It therefore makes sense that Peru would host the World Potato Congress, and in one of its major potato-producing regions: Cusco.

At the 2015 Beijing World Potato Congress, Chinese organizers handed over the role as host to the Peruvian State’s official delegation for the 2018 10th World Potato Congress to be held in Cusco, reports Andina News Agency.

The Peruvian Agriculture and Irrigation Ministry announced that Peru’s ambassador to China, Juan Carlos Capuñay, received the credentials to plan and host the event.

The purpose of World Potato Congress meetings is to support potato cropping and development worldwide. Peru is the first Latin American country to host the event, which draws over 1,000 people.

In addition to the region of Cusco, Peru’s central regions including Junin, Huanuco, Puno, Ayacucho, Cerro de Pasco and La Libertad are some of the top-producing regions in the country, according to Andina.

Peru has successfully hosted multiple large-scale international events including the Conference on Climate Change, the annual meetings of the Board of Governors of the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund, and the APEC Forum, among others.
