February is National Potato Lover’s month, and to honor this special time of year the Washington State Potato Commission (WSPC) is looking for one lucky couple who can show they are Washington’s ultimate potato lovers. The fortunate couple that will be crowned Washington’s most devoted potato fans will be able to showcase their potato love by serving a plethora of Washington State potato dishes at their wedding dinner courtesy of the WSPC.

The WSPC will spend all of February searching for and asking those who think they are Washington’s greatest potato lovers to enter the giveaway. The couple chosen as the ultimate winner will win a potato-themed wedding banquet catered by Blue Ribbon Cooking of Seattle valued at $5,000.

“Nothing says true love like a wedding, where a couple vows to spend the rest of their lives together. Nothing says true potato love like having America’s favorite vegetable take center stage within your banquet,” said Nelson Cox, WSPC chairman and a potato grower from Warden, Wash. “We can’t think of a better way to reward this lucky potato-loving couple than to ensure everyone at their wedding is able to enjoy a potato feast like no other.”

“Potato Lover’s Month is near and dear to my heart,” said WSPC executive director Chris Voigt. “My wife and I have some of our most heartfelt moments in February and potatoes of course played a pivotal role. Our first kiss was in February while at a potato conference and then, two years later, we were married during Potato Lover’s Month with many of our potato friends from around the country present. Love and potatoes just go together, especially during this time of year.”

Interested couples just need to submit a short video of themselves showing their potato love and describing why they should be chosen to win the potato-themed wedding banquet. The video that truly shows the world just why they are Washington’s greatest potato fan will win. Videos can be submitted on the WSPC’s website www.potatoes.com or via the commission’s Facebook page.

“The versatility of potatoes is second to none, and a wedding setting provides the ideal opportunity to showcase how many unique ways potatoes can be served,” added Voigt. “Imagine your guests enjoying mashed potatoes served out of a martini glass or potato croquettes combined with a spicy Thai curry sauce or literally dozens of other dishes. The options are endless, and every one of their guests will enjoy their dining experience.”

Potatoes aren’t only versatile, they are healthy as well. Washington potatoes have more potassium than a banana, as much protein as half a glass of milk, provide 45 percent of your vitamin C needs, and contain more fiber than an equal serving of oatmeal. A study by University of Washington professor Dr. Adam Drewnowski showed that potatoes are one of the best nutritional values in the produce section and provide the most nutrients per penny for consumers.
