CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The West Virginia Department of Agriculture is conducting tests to determine which potato varieties will grow best in the state.

State agriculture commissioner Walt Helmick says the project is under way on state land adjacent to the Huttonsville Correctional Center in Randolph County and the Lakin Correctional Center in Mason County.

Up to 14 different varieties have been planted at both sites, and the results will be measured to determine which types of potatoes will provide the most productive yields in those two regions.

Helmick says the aim is to boost the production of potatoes for consumption by West Virginians.
