BOISE, Idaho-The longest-running outdoor, cold-weather college football bowl game will continue to be called the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, though its ownership and the conferences involved have changed, officials involved with the game announced Aug. 14.
The ESPN subsidiary ESPN Regional Television has agreed in principle to acquire the game-which has been sponsored by the Idaho Potato Commission since 2011 and is played on the campus of Boise State University-from Humanitarian Bowl, Inc. Details of the pending sale were not divulged.
The game had been affiliated with the Western Athletic Conference. With the WAC's football program disbanded following the 2012 season, the bowl game recently reached six-year contracts with the Mountain West and Mid-American conferences, according to IPC President and CEO Frank Muir.
IPC is in the third year of a six-year, $2.49 million contract as the title sponsor, which Muir said remains unchanged.
