To Facilitate Old to New Crop Management
SALT LAKE CITY--United Potato Growers of America will host the first annual United 2006-07 Crop Transition conference on June 5 in Minnesota. The conference will provide a forum for potato growers to discuss and manage the crop transition period.
Crop transition period is defined as the time when shipping of the previous year's storage crop diminishes and harvesting of the new crop begins.
The fresh potato market suffers a disastrous decline in market price every year during July and August when the market transitions from old crop to new crop," said Buzz Shahan, UPGA chief operating officer. "A single short period of oversupply can cause months of depressed prices. Decisions made at this conference will help growers better manage this year's crop transition period."
The United 2006-07 Crop Transition conference, to be held June 5, will be at the Holiday Inn Select, Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, 3 Appletree Square (I-494 and 34 Avenue South), Bloomington, MN 55425. Hotel reservations can be made by calling (952) 854-9000. The conference begins at 7:30 a.m. with a continental breakfast and adjourns at three p.m.
Shahan stated that the United 2006-07 Crop Transition conference will allow fresh growers to analyze historical data about the July through August shipping period. This meeting will evolve a process to gather and disseminate statistical information by which a grower can make better market decisions.
