Aussie Harvest Sees Oversupply

Australian potato growers are struggling to make a profit after a good harvest lowered prices by about A$70 from last year.

The strong harvest in the southern states has produced an oversupply of market potatoes. This has seen prices fall to about A$250 a ton, down from around A$320 last year.

Victoria grower Mike Durkin told the Australian Broadcasting Corp., that most growers are struggling to make a profit.

"There's been an excellent growing season in Victoria and an excellent growing season particuarly in South Australia. Supply exceeds demand. A lot of things can change but for the next three or four months the prices look to be very, very average."
