Australian research has found that the winter blues can be overcome by eating steamed potatoes.

The Australian Center of Neuropsychotherapy said its studies have found that steamed potatoes are as beneficial as anti-depressants in combating winter depression or Season Affective Disorder.

SAD is related to a lack of sunlight during the winter months which limits the brain's production of its natural "happy" hormone--serotonin.

Center director Rod Markham said potatoes contain many essential vitamins that encourage serotonin production. It said steaming them retained the most amino acids.
