Australia and New Zealand are spending A$20 million on research and development to enhance the health value of fruit and vegetables.

The research, under the Vital Vegetables Program, is funding through the Australian Vegetable and Potato Growers Federation, the New Zealand Vegetable and Potato Growers Federation, the Insitute for Crop and Food Research in New Zealand, the Victoria Dept. of Primary Industries and Horticulture Australia Ltd.

The project will emphasize healthy eating with increased consumption of fresh fruit and vegetables in diets.

Research indicates certain components in fruit and vegetables have a positive influence on cancer, heart disease and aging. This project will focus on integrating qualilty aspects, such as flavour and freshness, in conjunction with enhanced bioactive (antioxidant) capability.

"This project takes strategic rural R & D to a new level--integrating non-GMO science to enhance quality, along with consumer demands for healthy and tasty products," said Secretary for Agriculture Judity Troeth.
