Canadian scientists have begun a project to produce bioethanol fuel from potato peels.

New Brunswick Agriculture Minister David Alward said the C$54,750 research project would use waste potato peels from processing plants in New Brunswick and from fresh potato packing businesses.

The research will be conducted by the Center for Excellence in Agriculture and Biotechnology sciences. Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and the Dept. of Agriculture, Fisheries and Aquaculture are contributing C$29,750 while the New Brunswick Innovation Foundation is contributing C$25,000.

The hope is that valuable new products can be made, adding value to the natural resources.
