Potato growers on Prince Edward Island, Can., want compensation for the land they have taken out of production for environmental buffer zones.
According to the Federation of Agriculture the growers want federal money of a one-time payment to value 25 percent of the land taken out of production.
They also want the option of doubling buffer zones or removing high slopes from production of row crops and establishing shelterbelts. In return, growers would receive $800 for the environmental improvements. They estimate 1,200 additional acres could be taken out of production in this manner.
