New Zealand’s Crop and Food Research Institute is about to test its potato varieties in Northern Ireland.

The trial of varieties such as Karaka, Red Rascal and Golden Delight is expected to lead to their marketing in Europe, North Africa and the Mediterranean through Potato Partners NI and the Dept. of Agriculture and Rural Development.

“The cornerstone of this success has been the development of potato cyst nematode-resistant cultivars by scientists John Anderson and John Marshall which are not only better than any other PCN-resistant varieties in Europe but also have very good storage characteristics,” Crop and Food Communications Manager Howard Bezar said.
