.>Australian potato growers who managed to harvest a crop during the worst drought in 200 years are getting high prices.
They are receiving up to A$600 a ton for this season’s crop—a dramatic turnaround from the A$60 a ton they were paid last year.
But costs have also risen because of the drought. It has been estimated that it costs A$240 to get each ton to market with the cost of water soaring along with the temperature.
Growers are facing another tough season next year because of a critical shortage of seed potatoes. Suppliers say they will be struggling to fill their orders.
