Irish government officials have announced intentions to merge Bord Bia—the Irish Food Board—and the Bord Glas—the Horticultural Development Board.

The move has National Potato Committee Chairman John Sheridan seeking assurances from Joe Walsh, Agriculture Minister, that the needs of the potato sectors would be met. He wants any action of the new board to reflect this.

Bord Bia acts as a link between Irish food and drink suppliers and their customers. Its objective is to develop export markets. Bord Glas is responsible for the development and promotion of the horticulture industry. It promotes increased consumption.

The Irish Farmers’ Association is less than impressed with the merger, saying the government was showing a poor commitment to the Irish horticultural and potato industries.
