Potato prices continue to soar as Australia’s worst drought since European settlement in 1788 continues to grip the land.

Analysts are predicting consumer prices will rise 32 percent this year even if, as is hoped, the drought breaks in March.

While prices are up, yields are down dramatically. In South Australia growers are harvesting about 14 tons an acre, down from the usual 18-20 tons per acre.

The popular Desiree variety has been selling in stores for as much as A$4 a kilogram, almost double the usual A$2 to A$2.50 a kilogram.
