NEW DATA SHOW WHITE POTATOES INCREASE INTAKE OF POTASSIUM

Consumption of white potatoes is linked to increased intake of potassium, according to a new study released at Experimental Biology 2013. For each additional kilocalorie of white potatoes consumed, there was a 1.6 mg increase in potassium intake among adults 19-years-old and older, and a 1.7 mg increase among children and teens from 2 to 18 years of age. Gender, age, race/ethnicity and educational attainment, but not income or body mass index, were also highly predictive of potassium intake.

DRY SPELL IN UPPER MIDWEST REGION

FARGO, N.D.—As much of the corn belt has been facing the challenges of drought conditions, the region directly north consisting of North Dakota, northeast South Dakota and northwest Minnesota has seen a productive year. As a result, land values have jumped 30 to 40 percent over the past year and crop yields have been substantial. In contrast to drought stricken areas, land in this region has been excessively wet which has hampered planting in recent years. However, a dry spell over the past 18 months has actually improved this region’s situation.

AG OUTLOOK MIXED FOR 2013

SPOKANE, Wash.—The outlook for the Northwest agricultural industry is mixed. Prospects for many producers are influenced by the expectation of a record Midwest corn crop. Lower corn prices should help dairies and feedlots, but will likely pressure hay and wheat prices lower. Demand for Northwest apples is strong, but the industry faces a trend of increasing production that could eventually oversupply the market. Good profits for sugar beet producers the last few years are being challenged by increased global sugar production, while potato growers that sell into the open market are expected to experience a second year of low prices. The apparent recovery in the U.S. housing market has sparked a surge in prices for the forest products industry, but has yet to make a material impact on recovery in the nursery industry. U.S. consumers continue to purchase more wine, which bodes well for wineries and wine grape growers in 2013.
