WET WEATHER FORCING FL GROWERS TO RUSH POTATOES OUT

Heavy rains recently have increased risk of rot in some areas of Florida's potato fields. Thanks to Tropical Storm Beryl and storms it left behind, some St. Johns County potato growers are moving to get their potatoes out of the ground fast before they rot. St. Johns County agricultural agent Steven Lands said the downpour came a few weeks ahead of normal.

The rain has made conditions hotter for the potatoes that are still in the dirt. An average of 3 to 6 inches of rain has soaked local potato crops since Beryl passed through, he said. “I know it’s too much,” said local potato grower Jeff Brubaker.
