U.S. CALLS FOR JAPAN’S INCLUSION IN TPP TALKS

WASHINGTON, D.C.—U.S. potato industry leaders last week applauded an announcement by the Obama Administration that it supports the inclusion of Japan in ongoing Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade talks. The TPP, a potential trade pact between the United States and 10 other countries (Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam), would enhance trade and investment among the TPP partners.

WSSA PESTICIDE SERIES: EMPLOYERS PLAY A CENTRAL ROLE

LAWRENCE, Kan.—An employer was fined recently after an inspection showed pesticide application information wasn’t posted at the job site, and an employee applied a pesticide without safety training or personal protective equipment (PPE). The posting, safety training and PPE are all required under the U.S. EPA’s Agricultural Worker Protection Standard (WPS).

REMOTE-CONTROLLED AIRCRAFT FLY NEAR HERMISTON FOR RESEARCH

HERMISTON, Ore.—Two small, remote-controlled aircraft are expected to start flying over potato fields in the Hermiston area this month as part of Oregon State University's efforts to help growers more efficiently use water, fertilizers and pesticides to bolster yields and cut costs.

This study covers the USPB marketing years of 2007-2011, and is a USDA mandated program assessment every five years.

WSPC STAFF TO RELY ON POTATOES DURING FOOD STAMP CHALLENGE

For one week, staff members of the Washington State Potato Commission (WSPC) are joining together to take the “Food Stamp Challenge.” Six staff members and one staff members’ family will participate in the challenge. Each participant is pledging to use the average weekly benefit available to Washington state residents living on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) as their total budget for groceries for seven days. A key ingredient for each of their menus will be the incorporation of potato products.
