DROUGHT DAMAGE COULD TOP $200B

The current drought pattern may be the costliest U.S. natural disaster of 2012 and 2013, according to experts with Harris-Mann Climatology. The long-range weather, commodity and stock forecasting service released their annual summer outlook last week, and the news wasn’t good for much of the Corn Belt.

UI PSYLLID SCOUTING PROGRAM STARTED

The University of Idaho, in collaboration with Miller Research and several crop consultants across the state, has initiated a scouting program that covers commercial potato fields throughout southern Idaho. The project is funded in part by ISDA. The primary means of sampling psyllids will be by the use of yellow sticky cards, although vacuum samples and leaf samples are being taken from some fields as well. The first traps were deployed during the week of May 13; thus far, no potato psyllids have been found in any samples. Details of the monitoring program and results of monitoring efforts (by county) will be available soon.

FERTILIZER INSTITUTE NAMES NEW PRESIDENT

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The Fertilizer Institute (TFI) announced May 22 that Christopher L. Jahn has been named president. Jahn comes to TFI from the National Association of Chemical Distributors (NACD) where he has served as president since 2006. Jahn will assume the helm at TFI on Sept. 9.
