SYNGENTA ADDS LOCAL TEXT ALERT TO HOTLINE

GREENSBORO, N.C.—Syngenta continues partnerships with key universities in Idaho, Michigan, North Dakota, Oregon and Washington to bring late blight hotlines to potato growers in 2013. The annual potato blight hotlines are sponsored by Revus Top® fungicide and provide growers with access to disease information that allows them to stay ahead of disease pressures in their area. This year growers can sign up to receive text messages alerting them whenever the hotline in their area is updated.

TOP RETAIL DISPLAYS IN IPC’S POTATO LOVER’S MONTH

EAGLE, Idaho—Consumers weren’t the only ones professing their love for Idaho potatoes during the annual Potato Lover’s Month retail celebration in February. Supermarket chains and independent retailers alike submitted 4,049 entries in the Idaho Potato Commission’s (IPC) 2013 retail display contest—the highest total ever in the competition’s 22 years and more than double the average number of entries over the past eight years.

IPHD PLANTS 5 CONTAINERS OF U.S. SEED IN THE CONGO

DENVER—The United States Private Voluntary Organization (PVO) International Partnership for Human Development (IPHD) purchased five containers of U.S. seed potatoes for planting on large tracts of land in the Republic of the Congo. This land was donated by the government to IPHD for the introduction of mechanized agriculture in this central African nation which has roughly 4 million people.

NEW DATA SHOW WHITE POTATOES INCREASE INTAKE OF POTASSIUM

Consumption of white potatoes is linked to increased intake of potassium, according to a new study released at Experimental Biology 2013. For each additional kilocalorie of white potatoes consumed, there was a 1.6 mg increase in potassium intake among adults 19-years-old and older, and a 1.7 mg increase among children and teens from 2 to 18 years of age. Gender, age, race/ethnicity and educational attainment, but not income or body mass index, were also highly predictive of potassium intake.
