The first study to check the effects of eating potatoes on blood pressure in humans has concluded that two small helpings of purple potatoes (Purple Majesty) a day decreases blood pressure by about four percent without causing weight gain. In a report in the ACS's Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, the researchers say that decrease, although seemingly small, is sufficient to potentially reduce the risk of several forms of heart disease.

A report from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has identified January 2012 as the fourth-warmest January on record for the contiguous United States. In the contiguous U.S., the average temperature for January was 36.3°F, which is 5.5°F above normal range. This makes the month not only the fourth warmest of its kind in history, but also the warmest since 2006.

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine—Last fall, Don Flannery, executive director of the Maine Potato Board, summed up the entire growing season as “challenging.” He is applying the same words to the months since, as Aroostook County growers deal with crop losses of 25 to 30 percent due to excessive weather and three tornadoes that went through the area early last June.

Thanks to investigations by scientists-turned-detectives with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and other agencies, potato growers in the western United States and abroad now know the identities of the pathogen-insect duo responsible for outbreaks of the costly tuber disease known as "zebra chip."

From October-December 2011, Mexican media contacts were provided three press releases entitled: “The potato as a food rich in vitamin B6,” “Potatoes with their potassium content are an ideal food to help control blood pressure” and “Attractive Nutrition.” These releases focused on the nutritional benefits of potatoes in all forms: fresh, frozen and dehydrated.

GRAND FORKS, N.D.—The Top Producer Seminar annually features the Top Producer of the Year award. This year, Gregg Halverson of Black Gold Farms, a 20,000-acre potato operation based in Grand Forks, N.D., won the prestigious honor. Other outstanding producers who were finalists for the award were Tim Richter, Randall Richter and Jackson Dohlman of Saratoga Partners, Lime Springs, Iowa; and Mike Stamp of Stamp Farms, Decatur, Mich.
