February is American Heart Month, and the Idaho Potato Commission (IPC) is connecting with social media users with the message “Love Potatoes, Love Your Heart.” Through the promotion, consumers can learn about the vitamins and minerals found in Idaho potatoes through a variety of interactive programs, according to a news release.

The American Heart Association has certified potatoes to use its Heart-Check Mark, and the IPC will be sharing educational quizzes and posts, cash and potato prizes and a Twitter party hosted by registered dietitian Danielle Omar.

“American Heart Month is the perfect time to remind consumers to include potatoes in their diet to help achieve a healthier lifestyle,” Frank Muir, president and CEO of the commission, said in the release. “Evidenced by the American Heart Association’s Heart-Check Mark certification, the nutritional profile of potatoes is very impressive.”

“Love Potatoes, Love Your Heart” began Feb. 15 with the Twitter party highlighting the benefits of potatoes. Prizes included $100 each to five participants.

During the weeks of Feb. 6 and Feb. 24, the IPC will test consumer potato knowledge through quizzes on its Facebook page. Everyone who takes the quiz is entered in a sweepstakes to win $500 and 15 pounds of Idaho potatoes.
