Black dot. Late blight. Fusarium wilt. Ugly names attached to truly ugly diseases with the potential to completely wreck an entire potato crop.

Over the years, growers, researchers and chemical reps have worked tirelessly to develop sustainable, economical solutions to the problems posed by these fungal maladies. Potato Grower’s fungicide buyers’ guide showcases a few of those solutions.

ChampION++

ChampION++ fungicide/bactericide has the smallest, most uniform copper particle distribution of any WG copper formulation. The result is better coverage and control against diseases such as early and late blight. High-density copper product means lower use rates and smaller pack sizes.

ChampION++ delivers all that with less environmental load than higher-dosage copper products. It is OMRI-listed for organic crop production. ChampION++ is applied at a rate of 0.5 to 1.75 pounds per acre starting when plants are 2 to 6 inches high. Tank mixing this product with other registered potato fungicides will improve disease control under severe disease conditions.

Salient 372 FS

Salient 372 FS works through systemic action to provide both preventive and curative protection against many seed- and soil-borne diseases including Fusarium, Rhizoctonia, seed rots and dwarf bunt. Salient 372 FS is an excellent seed treatment choice for potatoes, cereal cotton and corn crops.

Difenoconazole, the active ingredient in Salient, delivers proven performance against dwarf bunt in wheat. Salient can be applied as a seed treatment using standard slurry or mist-type seed treatment equipment. When used in combination with other fungicides having a similar biological spectrum, this product will add to the systemic protection of the seed and seedling and improve control under high disease pressure.

Prevont

Sym-Agro has commercially launched Prevont fungicide/bactericide, for use on tree fruit, grapes, fruiting vegetables, potatoes, cucurbits, melons and berries. Prevont is highly effective against fungal and bacterial diseases.

Prevont contains a highly active, patented strain of Bacillus subtilis, which is 400 times more active than competing products. It uses multiple non-toxic modes of action to control and suppress diseases. Prevont triggers a response from the plant, prompting it to defend itself against pathogens, and it prevents infection from pathogens through competitive exclusion. This multiple-site mode of action not only creates an effective fungicide, but also makes it very difficult for diseases to develop resistance. With a four-hour re-entry interval and zero-day pre-harvest interval, Prevont is an excellent tool for late-season disease problems, right up to and including the day of harvest.

AZteroid with Allosperse Technology

Vive Crop Protection’s Allosperse technology uses polymer nanoparticle shuttles to control how and when crop protection products are delivered to the plant after being applied. Crop protection products typically fail to mix thoroughly with liquid fertilizer. However, with Allosperse this problem is no longer an issue. AZteroid utilizes Allosperse and has proven effective in potato applications.

AZteroid fungicide is built for compatibility with liquid fertilizer and provides the ability to apply starter fertilizer and fungicide in-furrow in a single pass. AZteroid contains azoxystrobin and provides broad-spectrum control for a variety of seed and seedling diseases.
