SYNGENTA ANNOUNCES 3RD $5,000 SCHOLARSHIP

Greensboro, N.C.-Continuing its investment in the future of agriculture, Syngenta is sponsoring the Syngenta Potato Scholarship program for the third year. Applications are currently being accepted online and via mail. The $5,000 scholarship opportunity is available to students who currently reside or attend school in one of the following states: Colorado, Idaho, Maine, Michigan, North Dakota, Oregon, Washington or Wisconsin.
 
Students also need to meet one of the following requirements: 1) high school senior involved in the potato-growing industry or a member of 4-H or FFA; or 2) college freshman, sophomore or junior involved in the potato-growing industry or a member of 4-H or FFA. Applications must include: 1) name, 2) address, 3) phone number, 4) email, 5) school/college, 6) school year, 7) major/intended major, 8) agriculture involvement, 9) verification of the applicant's involvement/previous involvement in 4-H or FFA, 10) declaration of involvement in the potato-growing industry, and 11) an essay that does not exceed 700 words that addresses the following topic:
 
"Interest in becoming a full-time farmer is decreasing as the younger generations are facing the decision with what they want to do for the rest of their lives. Some will work as a farmer part-time and take on another job, and others might stay away from the ag industry completely. Why is it that this transition is causing a change in mindset, and how can younger people be motivated to continue their farming legacies? When writing your essay, consider the following aspects: 1) Education, 2) Technology, 3) Society.

The scholarship will be awarded and presented to the winner in November 2012 prior to the 2013 spring semester. In addition to the congratulatory letter that the winner will receive upon announcement of the $5,000 scholarship, he or she will also be recognized at the Potato Expo in Las Vegas, Nev., Jan. 9-11, 2013.
