Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder has appointed William Kitchen to the Michigan Potato Industry Commission.

The Michigan Potato Industry Commission works to foster and promote an economically sustainable potato industry in Michigan.

"William's background in the potato industry will be instrumental to the commission as it continues to advance a key segment of Michigan's economy," Snyder said.

Kitchen, of Elmira, is president, co-owner and operator of Kitchen Farms Inc. He is a third-generation grower who has been farming for 50 years. Kitchen Farms Inc. has been growing, bagging and shipping potatoes since 1909.

Kitchen will represent shippers and retailers. He fills a vacancy and will serve the remainder of a three-year term expiring July 1, 2013. The appointment is subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.
