Potato Marketing Corporation of Western Australia will continue to strictly control west Australia's potato production through licenses and quotas.

The West Australia government has again refused to deregulate the state's potato industry.

The quotas determine how many potatoes are grown, where they are grown, when they are delivered, the prices received by growers and the prices paid by wholesalers.

It is the only horticultural marketing monopoly left in Australia. It is probably the only board in the world with complete state government control. Officials say the system guarantees fresh potatoes year around to consumers at prices below the national average.
